Adult - Individual

Challenges such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorders, as well as stressors such as marital conflict, divorce, life transitions, and career challenges, can be debilitating and painful. Through a range of personalized, evidence-based interventions, we help people grow their awareness of the things that do not work well for them in their lives so that they can learn new skills and lead more adaptive, happy, and successful lives.

Family

Family dynamics are critical to overall well-being and are constantly evolving structures. Difficulties at school and work, divorce, financial struggles, physical and emotional illness, and sibling rivalry put stress on the family. At The Kahane Center, we offer comprehensive family support, with a focus on the parents, as they are the family’s backbone. We help parents recognize and understand their family structures and provide them with the skills necessary to be effective in changing dynamics that do not work well.

CBT - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

The premise behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is that the way we think about things affects the way that we feel about them and that affects the way that we behave. Evidence-based CBT focuses on challenging and shifting cognitive distortions in order to help people develop more adaptive behaviors and improve their mental health.

DBT - Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is an evidenced-based treatment that helps people to develop new skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflicts in relationships. It is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that incorporates mindfulness, distress tolerance, acceptance and interpersonal effectiveness to improve emotional well-being.
Life is complicated. It is hard to balance the many responsibilities that we all carry and many of us feel perennially overwhelmed by them. Improving and growing our Executive Functioning Skills (our ability to prioritize, plan, organize, time manage, etc) can be very helpful in alleviating some of this stress and improving our general well-being. At The Kahane Center we use a unique methodology, the POWERS Program, to help people grow these skills. Our POWERS coaches work with you to develop skills in areas of Executive Function in order to help you better meet your goals in your personal and professional life.

The POWERS program was developed by Dr. Tamar Kahane to help students learn to adapt to increasingly challenging environments. This innovative executive functioning and social-emotional learning curriculum has been piloted in schools and studied in collaboration with Columbia University. The methodology and philosophy of POWER is unique and targets the various aspects of executive functioning and SEL (social-emotional learning) that are crucial for successful performance in school, at home, and beyond. The POWERS (Prioritize, Organize, Work, Exercise, Regulate, Social Awareness) Program empowers children to better manage themselves. We offer virtual and in-person, one-on-one POWERS Coaching and as well as POWERS Parenting workshops throughout the year.
Led by Dr. Tamar Z. Kahane, the developer of the POWER program, this is a six-week group for parents via telehealth. The program targets specific skills and strategies to empower parents to support their children in growing their executive functioning and social-emotional skills. Parents will be matched based on their child’s age, targeting the developmental needs of their child. For parents of Preschool, Elementary, Middle, and High School age children.
Family Therapy
Family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the family structure, improving communication and addressing dynamics within the family that don’t work well.
Group Psychotherapy
Group psychotherapy can be helpful throughout the lifespan. It provides individuals with a safe and supportive place to develop awareness of self and others and learn to listen and communicate effectively.
Neuropsychological Evaluations for Adults
The Kahane Center provides in-depth and comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations and cognitive remediation for adults. These services are essential in understanding and treating people with a variety of learning, psychological and medical concerns including: ASD, ADHD, LD, brain injury, concussion, stroke, and dementia. Neuropsychological evaluations help us identify strengths and weaknesses in order to provide a roadmap to the most effective, evidence-based treatment.
Parenting
We believe in partnering with parents and empowering them with skills and strategies to support the work that we do with their children. Parenting sessions help provide guidance and tools to support parents and provide them with the resources they need to understand their children and promote their emotional, social and cognitive development.
Psychodynamic Oriented Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy focuses on the psychological roots of emotional challenges. It helps people learn to become more reflective and aware of themselves and others. Through this awareness individuals can learn to change behaviors, dynamics and patterns that do not work well in their lives.
Relationship Counseling
Marital counseling is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on helping couples become more aware of their dynamics and works to improve understanding, communication, emotional expression and to increasingly resolve conflicts in the relationship.
Sleep Hygiene Consultation
There are many benefits to sleeping well at night. Getting a good night’s sleep contributes to our overall health and mental well-being. Research has demonstrated that adequate sleep improves performance, mood, and brain functioning.
Social Cognition Group Therapy
As a pioneer in the field of social skills training, Dr. Kahane and her team provide multiple groups for people of all ages. When she began these groups twenty-five years ago, they were a ground-breaking endeavor based upon her doctoral research to target and remediate the deficits of children who suffer from social skills problems by utilizing small group dynamics. It is now recognized that social skills difficulties are a significant piece of the problem for people who struggle with ADHD, ASD, anxiety and mood based disorders and a host of other issues that affect the quality of their social, school, work and family life. Dr. Kahane utilizes a unique approach to help individuals become more aware of their own tendencies in order to improve communication and interpersonal skills. Group members are carefully matched based on appropriate criteria for optimal group dynamics. Groups are limited to a small size and run for 10-14 week sessions.
